Karina Fernandez

Biography

Karina Fernandez is a Vienna-based Argentine artist working at the intersection of material research, bio-based media, light, and installation. Her transdisciplinary practice addresses global issues such as environmental degradation and consumerism. Her installations often feature plants, fibers, light, water, sound, bioplastics, motors, and microcomputers where she explores bioplastics, organic residues, and ecological narratives, transforming fragile matter into sculptural and often luminous works that question extraction, decay, preservation, and speculative futures.

Karina Fernandez holds Fine Arts (1990) and Visual Arts (2003) Master degrees from UNA, Universidad de las Artes, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a Master in Digital Art from the Universität für Angewandte Kunst with Ruth Schnell in Vienna (2023).

Since 2001, she has participated in artistic projects and exhibitions in multimedia arts in Latvia, Germany, Croatia, China, Argentina, and Austria.

She has exhibited works at the Kunstlerhaus Museum (Vienna, 2013), the MAK (Museum für Angewandte Kunst) (Vienna, 2014/2015), and the Arsenale/Biennale d'arte di Venezia ("Biennale sessions", Venice, Italy, 2013).
